Setting Out Service

Setting out is the process of using Architects and Engineer drawings to precisely pinpoint and mark out structural features above and below ground before construction work begins. Setting out uses precise measuring instruments that achieve accuracy of 0-2mm. This gives you the confidence that your contractor will be building in the correct position using the right dimensions and levels.

Earthworks

Earthworks are engineering works that create either the finished ground profile required, or to create plateau levels for construction to begin.

Plateau levels are created by excavating to the required level (cut) or taking the excavated/imported material from one area of site and building in layers and compacting to the required level (fill).

RSSLtd can set out your earthworks using timber profiles and batter rails and advise on how to use them. RSSLtd can also provide datums to enable construction lasers to be used.

Foundations

Typically for a house footing, 3 visits to site may be required.

1^st visit: Mark out the house for site clearance and reduce level dig the plot ready for the footings to be set out. This visit may not be required if yourself or contractor are comfortable in identifying the correct area and level to reduce the ground to.

2^nd visit: The centre line of the footings will be sprayed onto ground. The groundwork contractor will then excavate the trench to the correct depth and width and fill with concrete, to the correct level.

3^rd visit: Once the concrete has suitably cured, the final visit will involve pinpointing the external corners of brickwork and knocking a masonry nail into the concrete. This will enable the bricklayers to start work.

Alternatively, foundations could involve piles, reinforcement or holding down bolts. RSS Ltd are experienced in all types foundations and can advise what setting out you will require for your individual project.

Drainage

RSSLtd are experienced in all types of underground drainage. This includes Foul and Storm Water systems, Petrol Interceptors, Attenuation Tanks, Sceptic Tanks and Rainwater Harvesting Tanks.

Typically for installing pipework and manholes (MH) centre of MH is marked with a timber peg or metal pin, lines can then be sprayed between MH’s to identify centre of trench for installing pipes. Level can either be controlled by installing offset profiles or by using a rotating laser or pipe laser.
